The Major Debate On The Formation Of The Constitution

The major debate in the formation of the Constitution was regarding the abuses in the British representation of the colonies and how colonist could be equally represented. The events prior to 1776 were pivotal moments that led to the Independence in 1776. The major event that shaped distain for the British was the French and Indian war (1756-1763). Before the French and Indian war the colonist under the British rule had been left alone to govern themselves. Directly after the war is when the British forced political and economic control on the colonies. There was great debate over who should pay off the war debt. Britain was forcing the colonist to pay for the war debt, â€Å"Britain’s motive and her interest was not attachment, Britain did not protect from our enemies, we protected hers† (Paine 107). As a result, the British passed taxation acts on goods, such as the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. The colonist tried to push back on the British control. Colonist began boy cotting goods imported into America. Boycotting became a major role in defiant actions against Britain. Compared it to being s â€Å"slave† Representation became a key issue within the colonies. Colonists were unhappy how they were being represented within the British rule. Often time people discriminate upon individuals unintentionally, because of certain stereotypes that have associated with race, gender, and religion. Broken Globe Stage 2 Essay Example For Students

Broken Globe Stage 2 Essay Characterization is the process by which authors make characters come alive for readers. Authors have many techniques available to portray characters, and they can broadly be divided into indirect and direct presentation. In the short story The Broken Globe, author Henry Kreisel brillantly develops the two principle characters, Nick Solchuk and his father, through indirect presentation. Consistency is the key to good characterization. From first person point of view, the reader obtains a full portrait of both Nick and his father indirectly by learning what he narrator sees and hears somewhat objectively. Nick, the narrators friend, is a successful geophysicist studying the curvature of the earth. He demonstrates persistance, passion, and determination in the study of the earth. He asks the narrator eagerly with his face reddening about his paper to the International Congress. Even under the torture of his father, he still keeps his goal of proving that the earth moves. He even retorts his father by saying miou can beat me and break my globe, but you cannot stop from moving. This passage shows his etermination in his belief. On the other hand, Nicks father adopts personas of sophistication during the short visit of the narrator. His father is stubborn that he only believes what he sees is the truth: is flat, and she stands still. He is also imptuous and fractious that he Nick like he is the devil when he wants Nick to accept the same concept of the earth as he believes. Both characters are consistent and static, for they are still living in their own world: one lives in a flat world and the other lives in the world of science. Another significant objective of haracterization is to reveal motivation. Kreisels story is set mainly in Alberta, a land flattens until there seemed nothing. Living in Alberta, Nicks father sees only the open prairies and fields every day; thus he perceives that the earth is exactly flat and still as what he sees. Moreover, the reader learns that he is hard to change his mind because he received an education of sorts when he was a boy. Therefore, he believes that the earth is the center of the universe and the center is still. Similarly, Nicks motivation is intrigued by a teacher who teaches him the earth is round and is oving. This teachers enthusiasm infectious as Nick says. The teacher shows Nick a world larger than the flat prairies, a world that is exuberent. Although the two characters own views of the world contradict one another, they do care and love each other. To build characters that convincing, the author must make their actions realistic and believable. Nick and his father are plausible due to their backgrounds. Nicks father is taught that the earth is flat and still, and what he sees outside in Alberta is only the far-distant prairies with neither hill nor tree nor bush. Furthermore, Nick, uffering from the violence of his father, always illustrates indomitable perserverence in seeking the truth. He continually shows to his father a globe can move, even though he knows his father will be mad. People with bond fide determination can achieve their goals, Just like Nick achieves his goal and becomes a geophysicist (to prove his father wrong? ). Altogether, they both are rounded characters in th at they demonstrate many attributes and traits. Nicks father is a and persistent geophysicist. Even though these characters are presented indirectly, Kreisel utilizes other methods to develop the characters. He shows them as static and round characters who are plausible and who remain consistent. Being first person narrative, no direct presentation is used because the author cannot speak directly. He simply assumes the persona ofa a narrator and therefore all presentation is indirect. One can find out a lot about a character by what others ay about him. Nicks father is developed in the beginning during the conversation between Nick and the narrator. At this point the reader discovers that Nick and his father differ in many ways. Obviously, Nick is a man of great intelligence as the narrator say, he studied at Cambridge and got his doctorate there and was now doing research at the Imperial College. The reader also learns that despite being a brilliant man, nick whistfully remembers his simple childhood growing up in Three Bear Hills, Alberta. Nicks father is developed much the same way later on in the onversation. Nick reveals that his father is a polar opposite. Nicks father is shown as a religious prairie farmer with a strange imagination. Nick also explains why there is tension between himself and his father. Curious man my father. He had strange ideas and a strange imagination too. He couldnt understand why I was going to school or university. l suddenly realized that the shape of the world he lived in had been fixed for him by some medieval priest in the small Ukranian villiage he was born in But he still lived in the universe of the medieval church. The reader now knows that Nick and his father are very different. Dialogue becomes a very important part of this story. The reader learns a lot about the father by what he says and by what he says he does. The first meeting between the father and the narrator shows a lot about the father. mfou friend of Nick?–What he do now? still tampering with the earth? Now, it has been confirmed that Nicks ideas differ greatly from his fathers. Nicks father may be a simple prairie farmer, but that does not mean that he is rude. The father acts very formally when inviting the narrator inside is house. He stands as the narrator comes in, which is a sign of respect; he even brings out coffee for the narrator. The reader continues to learn about the relationship Nicks father has with his son, and certain other people. The father explains how he exploded at a teacher for letting Satan in and for teaching Nick science at school. This act shows how the father deals with other people. The father I shake him and I beat him like he was the devil?–And he made me madder and madder because he doesnt cry or shout or nothing. l would of killed him right there for sure. The reader now knows how he handles his son. Nick and his father are both static, round characters. They do not change at the end of the story, but they have many traits. Nicks father proves he does not change by saying to the narrator Satan has taken over all the world. Then he suddenly rousled himself and hits the table with his fist crying passionately, But not me! Not me! The characters act consistently throughout the story. The Broken Globe is a deeply driven character story. Both main characters are well developed. In some cases, the apple falls very far from the tree.

According to better health (2015), a chronic illness is a long term illness, which can be stressful and may change the way a person lives or relates to others. For the purpose of this essay the author will investigate chronic depression (or Dysthymia). Despite mental health professionals’ massive efforts to educate the public, lack of knowledge and misconceptions around resulting in stigma and discrimination (Web MD, 2015). NHS (2015), state that the symptoms of chronic depression are sadness or depressed mood and being physically restless or rundown in a way that is noticeable by others. Fatigue  or loss of energy and problems with concentration or making decisions, a loss of enjoyment in things that were once pleasurable, either weight gain or weight loss of more than five percent of weight within a month, insomnia  or excessive  sleep  almost every day, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or excessive guilt and lastly, the most devastating symptom being the almost daily recurring thoughts of death or suicide. According to research carried out by Science Direct (2015), there are a range of different ways an individual can cope. These include; sourcing information on the illness, (which can help combat feelings of helplessness or lack of control), emotional support from others, (particularly family and close friends), setting short-term goals which can restore certainty, power and control and lastly, thinking about possible outcomes and discussing them with health professionals. The overall aim of these coping strategies would be to help the sufferer put into context and give some meaning to what is happening to them. However, not all individuals can achieve this and will find different ways of coping. Whilst coping with depression, individuals need to work on many aspects, contending with sleeping problems, eating, activity, positive and negative emotions, thinking, and relationships. Above all, individuals need to cultivate hope. However, all of these aspects cannot be worked on at the same time. If an individual is severely depressed, their first priority should be their physical health as this can improve their emotional wellbeing by releasing endorphins. These can lift a sufferer’s mood and give them a sense of achievement. Sufferers may also benefit from exercising in groups in order to help build new relationships. However, this coping strategy may not be achievable by all individuals as the participation in such physical activity could be unrealistic due to other underlying health conditions (Everyday Health, 2015). When reality is a nightmare for a sufferer of chronic depression, using sleep as a coping mechanism is simply like clocking out and taking a break from life. However, after sleeping, the reality will continue to make them unhappy. To add to this, a lack of sunlight due to excess sleeping will also lower the mood of the sufferer even further, because it causes an imbalance of certain brain chemicals (Thought Catalogue, 2015). Some other coping skills to practice for sufferers of chronic depression could include; meditation and relaxation techniques. Deep breathing techniques, can activate a relaxation response and help reduce stress. Hobbies are also important in order to set aside time to allow relaxation and escape from the stresses of life, for example, gardening, art therapy, dancing or cooking. One must remember that these techniques may not be suitable for all suffers because of differing interests, or the severity of the depression as they may feel more apprehensive than others to venture out of their surroundings to attend these groups (NHS, 2015). Psychologist World (2015), consider the attachment theory to be important when studying coping styles for chronic depression. Attachment is a biological need and is the basis of the power of therapy ranging from individual to group, hospitalization, and support groups. Ultimately, by the individual establishing or rebuilding secure attachments in friendships, family relationships, and intimate relationships they can start to recover. Stressful life events contribute to the onset of chronic depression. An individual can minimize stress by learning to use coping skills to manage stress. For example, by making sure there is clear communication with doctors, by maintaining emotional balance to cope with negative feelings and maintaining confidence and a positive self-image are essential in the process of remaining well. However, not all individuals can achieve this and find lowering stress levels harder to achieve than others (Help Guide, 2015). Finally hope is the foundation of recovery. What gives an individual hope might change from one time to another. Hope is likely to be intermingled with fear and doubt. One might be afraid to hope for fear of being disillusioned; thus hoping takes courage. Perhaps there’s no firmer ground for hope than the possibility that some good ultimately might come from the painful experience (Share Care, 2010-2015). As well as needing to find ways to deal with the stress involved with chronic depression, from this essay the author has found that an individual will also need to understand their condition, know about the treatments and therapy’s on offer. Maintain trust and confidence in heath professionals, especially when recovery isn’t possible. Know how to control their symptoms by using individual coping skills and lastly maintain social relationships and avoid social isolation. It was also found that obtaining and maintaining good coping skills takes practice. However utilizing these skills becomes easier over time. Most importantly, good coping skills make for good mental health wellness and a way forward from chronic depression. In this essay the author has examined chronic illness focusing on chronic depression and its symptoms. It has also critically evaluated coping skills used by individuals with chronic depression.
